The Stadium Club series was Topps early attempt at an Ultra Premium brand. Stadium Club's only competitor in the early 90's was Fleer's Ultra and some would say Stadium Club was better. I think they were both excellent brands that attracted many followers. From its first year in 1991 Stadium Club has yet to disappoint with its attractive photography and sharp card design, (See the 1993 Stadium Club "Todd Scott #164 below). The back of the Stadium Club cards didn't impress me very much early on. I didn't care for the Football News Skills Rating System that they included up through the 1993 series, (See the 1993 Stadium Club "Gary Anderson" #64 below). I felt like that info was for a Madden Video game. However, I did like the picture of the players first Topps card on the back. That was a nice touch. The Topps Stadium Club has brought about another Topps brand that the hobby just loves.
I recently won two Topps Stadium sets on ebay and I have to admit I have two opposing views on both of them. First, I got the 1995 Topps Stadium Club set. I liked the front of the cards, but the back of the cards were real busy and totally unorganized. The stats were an afterthought and useless, but the most hideous part of the back were those corny looking characters on the back of their cards. If you don't know what I'm talking about check out the 1995 Topps Stadium Club "Mike Johnson" #11 below. What the hell is that? I don't know, but it looks like it should be on the back of a Collector's Choice card. The last set of Stadium Club I've won is the 1997 series. Truly one of the best sets I own. The color explodes off of the card and I don't know who came up with the chainsaw nameplate, but it is real eye-catching and unique, (See the 1997 Topps Stadium Club "Kenny Holmes" RC #32 below)!! As a matter of fact, all other cards in this set are stunning, including the Rookie and Transaction cards. Note: As a collector I have noticed a huge number of errors on the backs of some of the 1993 series of cards. For example, On card #58 of Larry Centers it says beside his RC card picture, "1993 Studium Club Rookie Card". Another card, #64 Gary Anderson says beside his RC card picture, "1983 Topps Rookie Card", (See the 1993 Stadium Club "Gary Anderson #64 below). However, the picture is of a USFL card and Topps did not create a 1983 USFL set. These are just two of the many errors that I have come across that are not in the Annual Beckett price guide.
