Watching Football Growing Up

When we bitch and moan about having to get 5 different apps to watch all the games we want today, it's still way better today than it was 40 years ago. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, and even the early 1990s, watching the NFL was bad.  You got either 2 games on CBS and one game on NBC or vice versa every Sunday. And that was it until Monday Night Football where you might get to see your favorite on the halftime highlights. If your favorite team wasn't the local team, (like mine), then you may not see them at all each week.  This is how it was each and every week.

There are some fond memories that I have from way back when. And those memories are the commercials. They are mainly beer commercials, but they are still very memorable. So, take a seat and let me take you on a trip back to the 1980s and early 90s on Sunday afternoon.

1) Busch Beer Ad, 1978

Growing up in St. Louis in the '80s you always got your fair share of Anheuser- Busch ads. So, it's only appropriate that the first one I list is that famous Buschhhhhhh slogan.

2) Hamm's Beer Ad, 1978

Do you see a trend forming here? There were a ton of beer ads back in the day. But who were they selling to here? Kids? A "Beer Cartoon"? Really? And yet, I remember this one.

3) Coca Cola Ad, 1979

Now here is an ad that we should all remember. Silly, sappy, yet very memorable. One of several iconic commercials from this era.

4) Miller Lite Beer Ad, 1979

Do you see a trend forming here? There were a ton of beer ads back in the day. But who were they selling to here? Kids? A "Beer Cartoon"? Really? And yet, I remember this one.

5) Miller Lite Bowling Tournament Beer Ad, 1982

One of the best commercials from this era, in my opinion. Miller Lite just knew how to have fun.

6) The NFL Today Promo, 1982

God, does this one bring back memories too. You just had to be there to hear and see this jingle kick off your football Sunday.

7) The EF Hutton Ad, 1986

I have no idea why I still remember this one, but I do. Good ol' EF Hutton financial services. They got caught up in the Savings & Loan debacle back in the mid-90s and just disappeared.

8) Dan Marino Isotoner Gloves Ad, 1987

I have no idea why I still remember this one, but I do. Good ol' EF Hutton financial services. They got caught up in the Savings & Loan debacle back in the mid-90s and just disappeared.
